The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared that it would not recognise factional or parallel congresses by political parties.
The electoral umpire stated that only congresses approved by the National Working Committee (NWC) of the parties will be accepted.
The commission’s Director of Election and Party Monitoring (EPM), Aminu Idris stated this in Abuja at the Nigerian Political Parties Discussion Series (NPPDS).
Idris noted that NEC cannot go to the field and chose which congress to attend as this would amount to bias.
“INEC only recognise congresses conducted by the congress committee appointed and approved by the parties.
“The INEC cannot go to the field and be looking for parallel congresses outside the ones conducted by the congress committee appointed by the National Working Committee (NWC) of the parties.
“It is the responsibilities of the parties to obey their constitutions and their approved guidelines,” Idris said.
