Indian hemp smoker hacks grandfather to death in Imo

The Imo State Police Command on Saturday confirmed the case of a 22-year-old man, identified as Chukwuebuka Umunna, who allegedly hacked his grandfather, a centenarian to death. The incident happened on June 11 at Umuoke Otulu Ahiara Autonomous community in Ahiazu Mbaise Council Area of the state.

While confirming the incident to newsmen in the state, the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, DSP Andrew Enwerem said, “This is a murder case and the police are still investigating the matter. The suspect will be charged to court as soon the investigation is concluded”.

The Sun reports that Chukwuebuka committed murdered his grandfather, Umunna Anusiem because he reprimanded and advised him to be of good behaviour.

Speaking on the incident, father of the suspect and second son of the deceased, Mr. Umunna Julian, said his son dropped out of secondary school and subsequent efforts made by the family for him to acquire vocational skills or learn a trade had failed.

Julian said, “Chukwuebuka has been uncontrollable and stubborn. He smokes Indian hemp openly and bullies anybody who cautions him”.

“He was quarrelling with my father when I was going to work that morning. I was shocked to hear a few hours later that he had killed my father with a machete. It was a very sad incident because such a thing had never happened in this entire village.”

Also, younger brother of the murder suspect, Umunna Chigaemezu said trouble started when the deceased instructed Chukwuebuka to fetch bamboo sticks to support yam tendrils in their farms on that fateful day.

He said the suspect ordered him to leave the house or he would deal with him severely.

“To avoid a confrontation, I left the house, but when I returned,, I found our grandfather dead on his seat with deep machete cut on his head with blood gushing from his nose and his mouth. Instantly, I raised the alarm which attracted neighbours who rushed in,” he added.
