A concerned resident of the Rivers State capital, Port Harcourt, has staged a lone protest to draw attention to the spate of kidnapping, armed robbery and other violent crimes around Ada George-Location axis.
Tekena Iyala appeared half-naked as he marched to the headquarters of the Rivers State Police Command to register his grievances.
Iyala, who is a co-host of the popular ‘Funky-Four’ satirical programme on Today 95.1FM, Port Harcourt, ignored inquisitive gazes from onlookers.
At the Police Command Headquarters on Moscow Road Moscow, Tekena Iyala told senior police officers that robbery, kidnapping and killings were on the increase around Ada-George-Location area.
He complained that each time incidents of crime were reported to the nearby police station in the area, the officers made excuses with the question of jurisdiction.
The lone protester said he decided to take the challenge in the interest of those whose voice cannot be heard, just as he called for the establishment of additional police stations to boost police presence around Ada George-Location axis.
He said, “The crime rate in Rivers state is no longer funny especially along the Ada-George axis. There is hardly ever any day you will not hear the report of an incident.
“The worst part of everything is that when these things happen and you report to the Police station before Agip Junction, they will refer you to Ozuoba telling you that they don’t have jurisdiction.
“And when you get to Ozuoba police station you will realize that the police cannot actually help you.
“Why I have come here is to tell the Police to improve surveillance in that Ada-George area. Those boys are operating at free will. If possible, a police station should be set up in that area.”
In his response, the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Administration, Cyril Okoro, promised to transmit the complaints to the Commissioner of Police, with the assurance of immediate response.
