Inauguration: Senators congratulate Buhari, hail colleagues turned Governors

The Senate, in the course of its plenary session yesterday, congratulated President Muhmmadu Buhari and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo on their successful inauguration  on May 29, 2015. This was as they urged their colleagues who have been elected governors to observe the Rule of Law and strive to maintain the integrity of the National Assembly.

Members of the federal parliament who are now governors include the immediate past Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal (Sokoto state); Senator Ifeanyi Okowa (Delta); Ben Ayade (Cross River); Bindo Jibrilla (Adamawa), Atiku Bagudu (Kebbi); Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu) and Aminu Masari (Katsina).

The resolutions of the senate were made after a motion sponsored by Senate Leader, Victor Ndoma-Egba and supported by 101 other senators.

In moving the motion, Ndoma Egba noted that while congratulating President Mohammadu Buhari, his Vice, Yemi Osibanjo and members of the National Assembly who are now state governors, he would charge them to actualize the legitimate yearnings of Nigerians for a greater country in all spheres of social-political and economic life of the citizenry.

Also speaking, Senate President, David Mark, noted that if former President Goodluck Jonathan did not accept the outcome of the presidential election that ushered in the present government of Buhari, the story would have been different today.

His words, “For the first time in the history of this country, we discovered that the Presidential election is not before any tribunal, I think that is a milestone in our democratic process and we must acknowledge that it is a mark of statesmanship and a demonstration of the acceptance of the will of the people because election is not done by just one individual. Election is done by all of us who are members of the various constituencies.

“It is not just enough to congratulate President Buhari, I think we should also congratulate the former president, Dr Goodluck Jonathan, who willingly conceded defeat and followed the announcement with a telephone call to President Buhari and also appealed to his members to accept that as the verdict from the people.”

Senator Mark however rued the attitude of Nigerians to the victory of the All Progressive Congress, APC, who went wild while celebrating the Inauguration Day assaulting and attacking their perceived political enemies in attendance at the ceremony. Lamenting that his convoy was attacked while he was entering the Eagles Square on that fateful day, he noted that such action was unwarranted.
