The Imo State House of Assembly has adopted two motions urging ministries, departments and agencies to improve the sanitation of the state and banning the sale of locally brewed gin.

Presenting the motion on sanitation on Wednesday, Mr Chukwuemeka Lloyd (APC-Owerri-North) stressed the need for the offices charged with environmental sanitation and food hygiene to step up their activities to stop the spread of diseases.

The motion also urged public health officers to inspect market places, abattoirs and the means of conveying animals slaughtered in the market to their retail outlets.

The motion also called for sanitation trucks to be covered with tarpaulins to prevent littering the roads with garbage.

Similarly, the assembly adopted another motion banning the production, sale, distribution and consumption of locally brewed gin in the state.

Presenting the motion, Mr Innocent Egwim (APC-Ideato North) noted that the consumption of locally brewed gin posed a danger to the lives of its consumers.

He prayed that the state health ministry be compelled to trace the producers for possible prosecution while the brewing, sale, distribution and consumption of the product without legal approval be banned.

The motion also called on the Imo Orientation Agency to educate the residents on the dangers of the product.

Following the unanimous adoption of the motions by the lawmakers, the Speaker of the assembly, Mr Iheanacho Ihim (APC-Okigwe) ruled in favour of them. (NAN)
