Ikorodu United to play remaining NPFL home matches in Abeokuta

Ikorodu United have abandoned the idea of returning to the Onikan Stadium in Lagos and will play their remaining home fixtures in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta.

The Lagos team was sanctioned by the League Management Company (LMC), for crowd disturbances during their home game against Shooting Stars and ordered to play their next three home matches in Abeokuta.

However, Ikorodu United have now made it clear, that they will prefer to continue in Abeokuta, as they cannot “guarantee the full control of the crowd and general safety at the Onikan Stadium.”

“We will not be able to guarantee the full control of the crowd and general safety at the Onikan Stadium as the unruly fans at the Onikan Stadium are not known to us and neither can they be identified should there be any form of fracas,” the club’s general manager, Dele Gbajumo, wrote to the LMC.

The LMC has agreed to their request and directed them to work with the Ogun State Football Association on security.

Ikorodu United are currently in 19th place with 22 points.
