Ijaw Youths in Delta State on Monday threatened to shutdown the Operations of the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission, DESOPADEC, if it fails to pay Ijaw contractors their entitlements and other packages.

The youths under the auspices of Ijaw Youth Council, IYC, Western Zone handed down the threat in a statement mailed to DAILY POST on Monday.

The statement signed by IYC Western Zone Chairman, Mr. Frank Akiefa said, “It is not gainsaying that the Commission is setting aside the law of production and embarking on impunity and neglect of the Ijaw contractors thereby diverting the fund for personal gain.

“This has snowballed into intolerable hardship and death of members of the vendors’ family who are unable to provide for their families.

“Some vendors have had their property seized by banks, money lenders, and other financial institutions due to their inability to pay back the loans with which they took to execute the contract.”

The youth group said it will come out en mass to stage a peaceful protest to shutdown the Commission until their demands were met.

The Ijaw youths further called on the Delta State Governor, Arthur Ifeanyi Okowa, to immediately call the board to order to avoid a breakdown of law and order.
