The Ijaw Youth Council, IYC, has called on the Department of State Services, DSS, to release the 49 Niger Delta youths allegedly being held in the custody of the service.

In a reaction to the report, the IYC President, Eric Omare, told Punch Newspaper that the report was a true reflection of the human rights situation in Nigeria, adding that Niger Deltans were the most abused by security forces in the country.

He therefore asked the government to immediately order the DSS to release youths of the region currently languishing in its cells across the country.

He stated, “Under this administration, the rights of Nigerians are violated with reckless abandon without regard to the fact that we are in a civil administration.

“About 49 Niger Deltans are in the detention facilities of the Department of State Services for more than a year without trial. This is unthinkable in a democratic government where the rule of law is the cornerstone of governance.’

“Some of the Niger Delta youths currently in DSS custody are Alex Odogu, John Fortune, Michael John, Gabriel Ogbu, Justice Golubus, Joshua Golubus, Norway Suku and Felix Mieminye.’’
