Following the invitation by the Senate Ad-hoc Committee probing allegations of promiscuity and abuse of office against the Inspector General of Police, Mr Idris Kpotun Ibrahim by Senator Isa Hamman Misau, the IG on Wednesday appeared before the Committee.
Idris, however, appeared with his lawyer, Dr.Alex Iziyon (SAN).
In his address to the Senate Committee, the IG told the Committee that he was the complainant having charged Misau to court.
He explained to the legislatures that matters pending in court should not be discussed.
Speaking in the similar vein, Dr Iziyon while making references to similar issues insisted that the committee lacks jurisdiction to probe into those matters that we’re pending in court.
The lawyer said, his client has nothing to hide, noting that they were dissuading the committee on points of law.
“Distinguished Chairman, members of the Committee, I have the mandate of my client to speak for him,” he said.
“We are here today based on respect we have for the Senate, but I will like you to know that the matter has been taken to court which I have also served the committee,” Iziyon added.
IG’s presentation did not, however, go down well with the committee.
It resulted to sharp interpretation and counter interpretations with a word of caution by Senator Hope Uzodinma that the IG should do all he could not to escalate the issue.
Chairman, Ad-hoc committee insisted that the committee has constitutional responsibilities to investigate, while he adjourned the meeting with a promise that IG will be contacted to appear again.
