New Year, Ol’ EPL
The EPL is everything. Unforgiving. Relentless. Intriguing. Dramatic. From the first game of the day, when Ryan Shawcross scored the first goal, to Leicester City fighting back to draw Liverpool at Anfield. And of course, Spurs battering Jose Mourinho’s men at White Hart Lane, the Premier League lived up to its billing as the most exciting in the world. Top shelf drama.
Hurricane Harry Kane
It is easy to forget that Spurs have a 100,000/week striker AWOL. That is because of the brilliant form of homegrown Harry Kane. The Englishman was a constant thorn for Gary Cahill and John Terry all day, with his presence, pace and precision finishing. You expect the North London club to have his agent’s number on speed dial in the coming weeks. Time for an improved deal.
New men in charge watching
Former Newcastle boss Alan Pardew, was in the stands to watch Crystal Palace fire blanks at Villa Park, while Tony Pulis also looked on as his new team West Brom, rescued a point against West Ham. It will be interesting to see how they do with the two struggling clubs.
Wenger, fix it!
Every time you feel Arsenal are about to get back on track and string together a winning room, they get found out. Southampton completely overpowered the Gunners on New Year and it could have been more than the two goals they scored. Wenger’s men were timid, clueless and looked unprepared. It is a good thing the January window is open.
Lampard vs Chelsea
There is an interesting angle to the title race. It is Frank Lampard vs Chelsea. The former England international was allowed to leave on a free last summer, but he has come back to haunt his past employers. His first contribution for Manuel Pellegrini’s men, was an equallizer against Chelsea. On New Year day, he scored the winner as City beat Sunderland 3-2 at the Etihad.
