Ifeoluwa Orimoloye: Let them live

I am always suprised when I see people, whose primary responsibility is to take charge take a different turn by destroying it.Such is the case of the Nigerian Medical Students’ Association(NIMSA) who have blatantly acted contrary to the intended professional call of saving lives.

In the opinion outlook of The Guardianonline,Sunday 16th June 2013,Jerry Okwuosa said and I quote,”Members of the Nigerian Medical Students’ Association are so keen on legalising abortion that people are beginning to wonder if their parents sent them to medical school to specialise in abortion……………

Moreso as it is common knowledge that pregnancy is neither a disease or illness that requires legislation or research to find a cure for.In short, abortion is not healthcare.” Likewise the governor of Imo state, although he later became a repentant apostle due to tenacious criticisms by religious groups and other civil rights groups alike, who opposed the passage of the bill.

Recently,a friend of mine called to seek my opinion on a very pressing matter -one remniscent of the issue in question. Not bothering about courtesy demands,he goes straight to the point with a very exclamatory sentence that prophesied danger :”oh boy, yawa don burst o”,he starts.

Perplexed.I consequently asked “Wetin happen?”.”Lagbaja is pregnant o,and she’s pregnant for me”.Astounded,i responded,”Guy,you for done use protection now and or better still, abstain!

Anyways, the deed is done, wetin we go do now? “. “I don give her money and she sabi the next step now, abi.” was the prompt response he gave, though quite an expected one.

The conversation might sound funny, but the fact is,such solutions have become a reflex suggestion to the mind of the teeming youths and even to some of our fathers in their heyday but the question remains:

“Do you have the moral/biological/social or religious right to deny another of its life?”.No! because you might want to consider the child to be a foetus and not a human yet.I disagree and if you concede otherwise, the proof is yet to be convincing enough to warrant a legislative order supporting such callous action.

Afterwards,I asked my friend a simple question:”Do you believe in God’s plan?,do you believe that God has a plan for that child?do you believe in the fact that God has a plan for you as a prospective father of the unwanted child?Do you believe that there is nothing like bad timing in God’s dictionary?

“I asked those questions rapidly as if I was in a hurry, his response was direct”see,i understand the grave consequence and i am not ready to face them in as much as the consequence of leaving the abortion is also grave,i have to pick the best option bro, abortion!”.

“what are the grave consequences of leaving it”.I asked him,his answer:”My parents will be utterly disappointed in me,i will be consequently disowned, her parents too, will almost kill her, infact, the child may have to suffer throughout childhood including I and lagbaja,we will not be able to cater for the child and ourselves too.

We may not be able to survive…see let her do it.”He abruptly ended the call when he discovered that “my own” (my concern) was becoming too much.

And for the sake of definitive comprehension,Intra-uterine child lynching,as the name implies means the deliberate termination or purposeful inducement of a human pregnancy or expulsion from the uterus of a foetus or embryo prior to viability, otherwise referred to as abortion.

There is a general believe that the soul of the foetus does not enter the body until the fourth month of gestation and therefore killing the foetus is permissible. But yet the aforementioned principle, idea or theory as you may call it, is yet to be substantively proved.

Also, there is another law that should be considered,Feticide is an act that causes the death of a foetus.Feticide(foeticide) is another name for the “murder” of a child in the uterus.Feticide law states that a “child in uterus” is a member of the species-homo sapiens(human) at any stage of development, who is carried in the womb. This law recognises the child in the uterus a legal victim,if he/she is killed during pregnancy.

In absence of atheism or agnosticism,we all answer to one God or the other and if any even supports abortion,I’m yet to know.So at that, has God become so carried away that he purposely sends bad-timed children? And even if the projected consequences of a supposed bad-timed or unwanted pregnancy is grave.Do you think another murder is the way out because of disparaity in nomenclature….Sigh!….

Even at that, many have given birth to such children, yet they were in their prime, with the “Guy” strongly denying and the parents heavily disappointed, and their education almost in shambles. But yet, many recovered, looking back years after and tearfully smiling back to God saying “Thank You for not making me do this”.

The quoran has this to say about abortion;”kill not your children for fear of want(or poverty),we shall provide sustenance for them as well as for you.Verily the killing of them is a great sin”surah 17:13,”Losers are those who killed their children foolishly, due to their lack of knowledge, and prohibited what God has provided for them, and followed innovations attributed to God.They have gone astray, they are not guided.”(6:140)

Biblically, children are the heritage of God,”for behold, when the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby leaped in my womb for joy”(that is,when Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb) Luke 1:44,before I formed you in the womb,i knew you,and before you were born I consecrated you;i have appointed you a prophet to the nations jeremiah 1 vs 5.

In as much as God recognised a lot of people in the bible right from the womb, then God gives a lot of regards to those children, foetus as we do call them.Relating those scriptures to the verse in the bible that says”Thou shalt not Kill”Exodus 20:13,that implies that the bible forbids it outrightly.

As grave as it is,lots are still taking shelter in this unfortunate act while others take another but similar turn of throwing away these children in an often unfavorable/unfriendly environment where they might end up being killed.

And if the any of the babies ever gets rescued, nutured, and raised by another parent of a non-biological inclination, tell me,how will it feel,on the day of truth that they were never wanted? It will be disheartening, you will be worse than a murderer.

Sincerely those “unripe victims” need to be carefully admonished or dealt with,as the case may be,but not to the extent to which most parents take it these days.

That further explains the reason why parents too are not left out in this ungodly act, which is not far-fetched.They try to forestall the shameful aftermath and the stigma that comes with the basics of their child being pregnant.

At times, due to trepidation and in the process of trying to avoid being disowned, the victims face the harsh option they are presented with:ABORTION.

However, most of us have been survivors of contemplated abortion often due to the inadequacies of the hardtimes and the bleakness of hope the future appeared to offer then. But we have always been grateful and so gladdened to survive, afterall,if our parents had not given it a thought in retrospect,we might have not been able to achieve most things that we have achieved.

Overtime, products of such untimely circumstances are well represented in different Halls of Fame that the world has. This however suggests that those children that have been aborted are also bound to be great.

This is however not an avenue to condemn those that have engaged in this act but to actually admonish them to join the “repentant team”,and I hope that whatever your stand on this previously was,you could have a change of mind.

As I fact, an establishment of organisations that will cater for rape victims should also be considered

Atlast,i had an extreme and extensive discussion with my friend, the boyfriend of lagbaja, over a bottle of beer each and I was able to convince him into keeping the child and letting the child live.I hope that the child will grow up and become great and my friend will have to come and thank me for this “wicked advice” I rendered.
