A group under the aegis of Concerned Idoma Citizens has demanded the immediate release of the Vicar General of the Catholic Diocese of Otukpo, Rev Fr John Adeyi.
DAILY POST reports that the cleric was abducted last month on his way to Otukpa, the headquarters of Ogbadibo LGA by unknown gunmen.
The kidnappers had earlier demanded for a ransom of N25m. However, they have not contacted the family again since then.
The group, while expressing disappointment with security agencies over their silence on the abduction of the cleric, said.
Addressing newsmen in Abuja on Tuesday, president of the group, Samuel Onyilokwu wondered why the relevant authorities have decided to abandon the priest in the kidnappers’ den for over two weeks.
According to Onyilokwu, the Idoma community was no longer comfortable with the careless attitude of the government towards the abducted father.
“It is over two weeks now since our son, Very Rev Father Adeyi was abducted by some dare-devil hoodlums on his way to Otukpa. It is disheartening that the security agencies have not done the needful to rescue him.
“Sadly, it took the state government two weeks to react to the incident. We the Idoma people are calling on the security agencies to bring back our priest alive.
“We are tired of hearing empty promises from the people who swore to protect our lives and property,” Onyilokwu said.
Speaking further, the soft-spoken legal practitioner, who was with other top members of the group gave the Nigeria Police, Army and other security agencies seven days ultimatum to rescue the priest and as well bring the perpetrators to book.
“We are giving them seven days to bring back our son. Injury to one is equally injury to all. Enough of the dead silence,” he added.
