Idoko Okarikede: David Mark at 66 – tribute to an old soldier

our ex-cell-ency, I bring you greetings from the green grasses at Akpegede Golf Course.

Here’s is a basket full of eulogies from the St. Mark Movement Mass Music Ministers.

I bring you tributes from your kinsmen at Otukpo General Hospital who have been sentenced to ‘bedternity’ by cholera.

I bring you special greetings from the good people of Orokam -I mean Orocity, the land of equity.

I bring you greetings from primary school children who have been at home for over a ‘decade’ because the ‘Managing Director’ of Government House Makurdi has refused to pay their teachers’ salaries.

I bring you greetings from commuters sweating it out on the struggling bald-headed Otukpo-Otukpa road.

Here are tributes from innocent indegenes who have been sentenced to the great beyond by the sharp swords of the Fulani Herdsmen. They salute your patriotism, dedication and love from their graves.

As you MARK your 66 birthday sir, thousands jobless Idoma youths who were almost smashed during the just poor conducted NIS recruitment exercise, which was handled by one of your ‘band boys’ salute you.

‘We hail thee’ those rendered homeless in Agatu by Fulani Herdsmen chorus.

I bring you greetings from your two ‘friends’ General Lawrence Onoja and Young Alhaji.

They asked me to tell you that blood is ticker than water.

Today, I bring you N12,891,621,534b greetings.

The Zone C constituency budget that was meant to be implemented in 2013, but sadly the money?….*coughs*

Like Enenche Enenche my friend would always say, “When the jorney of a Nation was enveloped in a secession dust of despair, He fought hard, endured bullets wounds for a Green White banner to be standing today… Thank you sir!

He has served and still serving his father land to best of his human ability… Thank you sir!

When a Presidential Jet was parked in Saudi Arabia for months, African largest democracy was heading for doom, He activated a “doctrine of necessity” and stood on a red carpet when He pressed for and passed a resolution that saw a vice president becoming an acting president… saving a Nation and a generation from bloodbath

In 2010, He made a Mark, averted a looming civil War… Thank you David!

His name David reminds one of Biblical Jesse who fought 66 battles and won all of them.

My brother Aleichenu is not that lucky like His Biblical namesake who won all His battles… Though He has won most of the battles he confronted, but for few He never won… among such is the one currently facing him in Agatu, the war of water scarcity in Otukpo and the abandoned RAMP projects.

The battle of a long awaited Apa State that would never see the light of day.

I weep at the loss of those battles… To me, flying in a chopper over blood flowing on the streets of Agatu was not a show of strength. (Apology to Enenche)

Today, on behalf of the good people of Idoma, I celebrate your love and service to fatherland.

As you Mark your 66th birthday, we pray God to spare our lives till you clock 666 years.

Your kinsman, Idoko Okarikede writes from Amsterdam.
