The management of The Polytechnic, Ibadan on Tuesday directed students of the institution currently on a mid-semester break to resume tomorrow, Wednesday, 8th May, 2019.
The institution said the resumption became necessary in order for the students to continue their academic exercise for the remaining part of the first semester 2018/2019 academic session.
The resumption directive was contained in a statement signed by the Registrar of the institution, Mrs Modupe Theresa Fawale.
DAILY POST recalls that the institution had, in an April 4th statement signed by Fawale, said it has suspended all Students’ Union Government activities within the campus.
The suspension of the SUG came few hours after violence erupted shortly after a football match between the students in the faculty of engineering and their colleagues in the faculty of business and communications studies.
The institution thereafter asked the students to proceed to a compulsory mid-semester break.
But Fawale, in a statement made available to DAILY POST on Tuesday in Ibadan, the state capital, disclosed that a town-and-gown meeting held on Monday, 6th May 2019, with parents, guardians, communities surrounding the institution as well as traditional rulers, religious leaders and landlord associations yielded positive results which culminated in the decision to re-open the institution forthwith.
The Registrar, in the statement, added that each student is to pay the sum of two thousand naira (N2,000) as reparation for the damages of the institution’s facilities.
She also disclosed that each student will also among other things swear to an affidavit to be of good conduct while those residing in neighbouring communities would sign a bond with their landlords to be of good conduct and worthy ambassadors of the institution.
Fawale explained further that each student is also to write an undertaking to be of utmost good conduct.
She said, “Stakeholders discussed with management among other matters all forms of indiscipline exhibited by the students, urged the management to clip the wings of any student found to be engaged in any act of indiscipline and should not hesitate to hand over such student to the law enforcement agents if necessary.
“Each student on resumption is to pay a reparation fee of #2000 for the enormous damages of the institution’s facilities.
“The students will also among other things swear to an affidavit to be of good conduct while those residing in neighboring communities would sign a bond with their landlords to be of good conduct and worthy ambassador of the institution.
“Each student is also to write an undertaking to be of utmost good conduct.
“The landlords in the neighboring communities as well as parents and traditional rulers agreed to be ears and eyes of the institution by feeding the management with information to track erring students and bringing them to book.”
