Former Arsenal striker, Ian Wright, has said the club needs the spending power of a billionaire such as Alisher Usmanov in order to move to the next level.

The Russian already owns a 30% stake in the club, but has written to majority shareholder Kroenke to express his interest in taking over. Kroenke is yet to respond to the letter, which was sent last month, but is thought to be unwilling to sell.

“Two weeks ago, I thought something could realistically happen. Now I am not so sure,” The Financial Times quotes a source as saying.

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 live, Wright said: “He has put in the bid and it is great news.

“Something has to change, whether it is the manager Arsene Wenger or whether it is the board upstairs.”
