A suspected rapist, Matthew Umeh, has been apprehended for raping his wife’s younger sister, Mercy.
The 35-year-old man was arrested by the Lion Building Police Division, Lagos on Sunday after having canal knowledge of the 15-year-old.
Umeh, confessing to the crime on Thursday, told the Punch that he had returned from a naming ceremony, drunk and had confused Mercy for his wife.
He said, “When I came inside the house, I saw the girl. She tied only a wrapper. I did not know what I was doing and I raped her, I thought she was my wife,” he added.
Mercy who had been living with the Umehs since she was five years old, said Umeh raped her two times.
She was said to have run out of the house after the incident, during which some policemen on patrol saw her and she narrated the incident to them which led to the suspect’s arrest.
When contacted, the Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, confirmed the report.
According to him, “The suspect has allegedly been raping the girl since she was five years old, however, he would be made to face the law,” Owoseni added.
