Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes has confirmed he is to retire from football at the end of the season.

Scholes, 38, retired at the end of the 2010-11 season but returned in January 2012 after revealing he had rushed into ending his career at Old Trafford.

Injuries have limited the former England international’s role at the club this season, as he has failed to make a Premier League appearance in 2013.

In an interview with former team-mate Gary Neville for Sky Sports, Scholes said he has decided now is the right time to hang up his boots.

Asked if incoming United manager David Moyes would be able to rely on Scholes next season, the former England international replied: “No, he will not. I think this is it – I’m sure this is it. It’s not been the season I would have liked to have gone out on. The last four months have difficult.

“I know now in my head that I’ve gone as far as I can go.”
