I thank God we did not defeat Nigeria – Salah

Egypt winger, Mohammed Salah, has admitted he was happy with the 1-1 draw with Nigeria in last Friday’s 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Kaduna.

The Roma player admits that he is not sure what the reaction of the fans would have been, if he scored the winner with the last kick of the match.

Salah equalized for the Pharoahs with three minutes left and appeared to be bearing down on goal in the last seconds, before referee Janny Sikazwe ended the match.

The decision provoked an angry reaction from the Egyptian players, but Salah says he was relieved.

“I breathed a sigh of relief after the ref blew the final whistle,” he told Al-Ahram Daily newspaper.

“I was afraid when I received the ball and was heading directly towards the goal to score what could have been the winner.

“Had I been able to score, I wouldn’t have been able to tell what exactly the fans’ response would be, that’s why I thanked God right after the final whistle.”

Egypt, who lead Nigeria with two points in Group G, welcome the Eagles on Tuesday in Alexandria.
