The Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, has tasked the newly inaugurated Local Government Caretaker Committee Chairmen and their Deputies in Enugu State to make service to the people their watchword.
Ekweremadu, who spoke on Sunday when he hosted the new Caretaker Committee Chairmen and their Deputies from Enugu West Senatorial District to a congratulatory dinner at his Enugu residence, urged the chairmen to avoid the ‘banana peels’ from the stakeholders in their council areas.
He maintained that to succeed, the chairmen must defeat the temptation of converting the people’s resources to their personal use.
The senator implored them to leave above board in their assignment by using the bottom-top approach to governance, which he described as “living with the people, feeling their pulse and attending to their needs.”
He reminded them that they were not the best or most qualified in their respective Local Government Areas, but that God in his infinite mercy simply picked them for the job.
According to the Senator “service should be your watchword and as it is the only way to write your names in gold and also grow politically.
“We were at a time Local Government Chairmen but by the grace of God very few of us are still active in politics today. That’s because we left the temptation to make money and served the people. “If you go to my Local Government Council, most of the structures there today are those that I built as a Chairman.”
Senator Ekweremadu reminded them to also avoid the banana peels from stakeholders in the Local Governments, adding that they must find a way of carrying them along, through regular consultations.
He pointed out that “the reason why most politicians in our clime fail is their penchant to work alone without carrying the critical stake holders along”, advising that leaders must find a way to bring those stakeholders close to activities of government so as to foreclose suspicion.
Responding on behalf of the Chairmen, the Caretaker Committee Chairman for Aninri Local Government Council, Hon. Chidi Ekwe assured the Senator that they would leave up to the expectations of the people;, adding that they will not disappoint the Senator, the Governor and ultimately the people.
He paid glowing tributes to the Senator for all he was doing for the district, the State and indeed the country at large.
