The story of the Nigerian music industry remains incomplete without the inclusion of Augustine Garuba Ahmedu, otherwise known as Blackface Naija of the defunct Plantashun Boiz.
Unknown to many, Blackface Naija who co-owns African Queen, the song that gave 2face Idiba fame remains a force to reckon with in the ever-growing Nigeria’s music industry.
Asked what has been happening around him lately, the Idoma-born music star would always say “It is all about music. This is the path I’ve chosen, this is where I belong and here I will remain.”
In this brief chat with DailyPost Correspondent, Comrade Ameh, the Hard Life crooner dismissed the news making the rounds that his wife abandoned him because he’s broke. “I don’t see that as an issue, if they say my wife left me because I’m broke; good and fine but the good thing is that I’ve never complained to any of them. They can say whatever they want to say, but the truth is that once you are in something and it doesn’t work out, you have to let go.” “It is true that my wife has left me, but it has nothing to do with my status. I can tell you now that I’m not missing her, I’m only missing my two kids, Alex and Caroline,” he added. Speaking further, he said: “I would like to tell my fans to watch out for my forthcoming album. I was only quiet, reflecting over my new musical approach, which is not conventional. I think I have a new way of doing things all together. I’ll soon bounce back. My best is yet to come, I haven’t gone anywhere”
Asked if he will still reconcile with his estranged wife , the father of two said: “I think music is now my wife. Maybe one day I will give that a second thought but for now, music is my life, my wife.”
Asked when the much awaited Plantashun Boiz’ album would hit the market shelves, the ace songwriter cuts in: ‘I even answered this very question last week. For Christ sake where is that one coming from? Some people could be funny sha.
“I said it before and if you want to hear I will tell you again. Right now, I am working on my fourth album entitled Defender and until that is actualized I don’t see any other thing coming on board. I don’t rush my things, so the project is not on my mind” he affirmed.
Finding out what must have gone wrong with Plantashun Boiz, he said “We still keep in touch, we are not fighting. 2face is my brother and Faze is my friend and colleague in the industry. The name Plantashun Boiz won’t die but I don’t see us coming back as a band again. We must move ahead.
On why he’s not making waves like 2face and Faze, Blackface said, it’s all about destiny. “We all have our fans and followers. Go to the market, my albums are still selling up till today. My first solo album, Ghetochild was a hit. I don’t blow my trumpet, like I would always say, a dog that bites doesn’t bite indiscriminately.”
When asked to comment on how he came up with the song, African Queen, Blackface said, “that is an old story na. I think you are a journalist and there is something called stalled news? How can you be asking me of something that happened over ten years back in 2012? As far as I am concerned that is an old story.
When prodded further if he is getting royalty from 2face, the three-times album star and graduate of Business Administration said. “You na case o, where you dey here all these sef? You know that I can’t answer that question.”
