HURIWA mourns ex-FCT NUJ chairman, tasks NUJ, Okorocha to immortalize late Ehirim

The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, HURIWA, has bemoaned the death of the immediate past Chairman of the FCT Chapter of the Nigerian Union of Journalists, NUJ, Comrade Chuks Ehirim, noting that the fallen Journalism hero lived all his professional life with total commitments to uplifting the journalism profession in the country.

Expressing unfathomable shock and trepidation at the sad event, National Coordinator of HURIWA, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko called on the leadership of the NUJ both the national and Federal Capital Territory, FCT, to name a specific monument like the ongoing secretariat of the FCT Chapter of NUJ after the memories of the late Ehirim.

Onwubiko asked the Imo State governor, “Chief Rochas Okorocha to name the mass communications faculty building of the Imo State University Owerri after the memories of this illustrious son of the soil who was constantly in touch with Imo State and worked with likeminded patriots to promote Imo interest.

On its part, HURIWA said it will enlist the late leader of the NUJ into the national human rights Hall of Fame as a legend of human rights in Nigeria, even as it canvassed the establishment of an educational endowment fund by the NUJ, FCT Chapter to provide sufficient education to the immediate children of the late Union leader.

It noted that this will be “a mark of honor for the numerous credentials of selfless service of the great democrat who just like immediate past President Dr. Goodluck Jonathan relinquished his high office after he was democratically defeated at the NUJ election recently.”

Ehirim, who served as the FCT NUJ chairman up till 2015, died on Thursday at the Garki hospital in Abuja on the same day he was to hit the golden age of 50. A graduate of Mass Communication from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, the fearless journalist had worked at TheNews magazine and as Deputy Editor at Global Paragon news magazine.
