Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA), an NGO, has urged the Federal Government to direct the Department of State Services (DSS) to deploy intelligence-driven strategies to arrest masterminds of insurgency in the country.
This is contained in a statement signed by the National Coordinator, HURIWA, Mr Emmanuel Onwubiko, in Abuja on Monday.
He said that the violence in the North East and parts of North Central had led to the gruesome killings of over 8,000 Nigerians.
“The destruction of property, including the displacement of Nigerians must be brought under control,’’ he said.
Onwubiko attributed the increasing spate of attacks to the inability of security agencies to effectively activate intelligence-led mechanisms to uncover the kingpins
He said that the terrorists had successfully killed several innocent Nigerians in recent times by using teenage girls and vulnerable elderly women as couriers of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs).
He said that the fight against terrorism would not be successful with combatants in the fields alone without the intelligence components.
Onwubiko maintained that the role of the DSS was critical in the fight against terrorism.
“The need to uncover the identities of the founders of Boko Haram has become imperative because that’s the best way to cut down the taproot of suicide bombers.’’ NAN
