How Rooney snubbed a big-money move to China

Manchester United and England captain, Wayne Rooney turned down a big-money move to Chinese Super League side Beijing Guoan in the summer to remain in England.

Beijing Guoan honorary chairman, Luo Ning revealed how he met with the Manchester United captain’s agent to discuss a possible transfer, but their offer was rejected on arrival.

The 31-year-old England captain has recently lost his indispensable status at Old Trafford following a catalogue of indifferent displays over the past few seasons.

The striker has been linked with a move away from the Premier League, with the American Major League Soccer, MLS, and the Chinese Super League touted as potential destinations.

Luo Ning told a Chinese sports radio show, “We indeed made an approach for Rooney at the beginning of the season but he’s informed us that he wants to stay in Manchester United.

“Rooney says he’ll keep playing in the Premier League as long as his health allows. We even met with his agent [Paul Stratford].”

Rooney, who was dumped out of the Mourinho’s side, was restored to United’s starting XI for the 3-1 win over Swansea on Sunday, where he showed some signs of rejuvenation.
