Manchester United manager, Jose Mourinho, decided to go after Nemanja Matic, after accepting that his former club, Chelsea was close to getting Tiemoue Bakayoko from Monaco.
Bakayoko was on Mourinho’s summer wish list. He made attempts to sign the midfielder, who shone for the Ligue 1 champions last season.
Chelsea will get their man this week for a reported £35million and is prepared to sell Matic to United for £40million.
Mourinho brought back Matic for a second spell at Stamford Bridge in 2014 and is set to be reunited with the Serbian at Old Trafford.
The Portuguese sees the midfield holding role as a key position, after offloading Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin last season.
The deal is unlikely to go through until the end of this week at the earliest.
