Jose Mourinho reportedly rejected the chance to replace Sir Alex Ferguson, as manager of Manchester United in 2013, after the Scot stepped down from the role.

Ferguson was eventually replaced by David Moyes, who lasted less than one season before he was sacked .

According to the Daily Mail, United’ executive vice-chairman, Ed Woodward met Mourinho who was managing Real Madrid at the time and discussed the possibility.

However, the Portuguese explained to Woodward, that he had given his word to Chelsea and Roman Abramovich, that he would return to Stamford Bridge that summer.

During that period, Moyes and his successor, Louis van Gaal, spent more than £300million and achieved relative mediocrity.

The Red Devils are currently 6th in the Premier League with 13 points.
