How Iwobi’s debut for Super Eagles saved his Arsenal career

Alex Iwobi’s decision to switch allegiance from England to Nigeria, proved to be crucial to his Arsenal career.

OwnGoalNigeria reports that Iwobi was included in the list of youth team players to be released by the Gunners, as he was already 19 at the time and wasn’t deemed one of the top prospects in the youth set up.

However, things changed dramatically, after Super Eagles handler at the time, Sunday Oliseh, invited him for a friendly game against Congo Dr. when he made his debut two years ago.

His debut for his country of birth, made Arsenal delay their decison until the end of the season. As fate would have it, a combination on injuries and suspension opened the door to the first team for Iwobi and he has not looked back ever since.

Manager Arsene Wenger ended up approving a new deal for the forward.
