A former member of the National Assembly, Sen. Magnus Abe, has said that he used his personal funds to execute empowerment projects when he served as senator.
Abe, who represented APC in Rivers South-East Senatorial District in the 7th senate, made the statement on Friday in Port Harcourt while briefing newsmen.
Abe is also the APC candidate for the re-run election in the senatorial district, though INEC was yet to fix a date for the poll.
He said that insinuations that his empowerment projects were executed with funds for constituency projects were false.
He promised that if re-elected, he would continue to give back to the people in appreciation of their support.
He said that when he was in the senate, he was given the privilege each year to select a project for execution in his state.
“In my first year in the senate, I selected the construction of a primary school in Zaakpon and Oyigbo.
“The school was built by the Federal Ministry of Education under the then minister, who is now the governor of Rivers state, but was not the contractor.
“In my second year, I selected the construction of a building in the University of Port Harcourt, which serves my senatorial district and beyond.
“That building was also built by the Federal Ministry of Education,“ he said.
Abe added that he also selected the construction of a building project for his Alma Mater, Rivers State University of Science and Technology, which was also constructed by the Federal Ministry of Education.
He dispelled reports that each senator received N500 million as funds for constituency projects.
“At no point in time was any money given to me.
“The electrification projects and scholarship scheme which I funded were with my personal resources.
“This is money I would have used to buy cars, build houses; it is not money given to me by the federal government,” he said. (NAN)
