It has emerged that former England manager, Roy Hodgson, tried to stop Alex Iwobi from making his international debut for Nigeria last year.

Iwobi made his competitive bow for Nigeria in their 2017 AFCON qualifier against Egypt in Kaduna.

This meant he could not play anymore for England, who he had represented at youth level.

According to ACL Sports’ Calvin Emeka, Hodgson called the Arsenal forward while he was on his way to the airport for his debut, in a last-ditch bid to persuade him.

“While Iwobi was on his way to the airport for that qualifier against Egypt. Roy Hodgson was on the phone to him not to go. That’s the kind,” Emeka tweeted.

Iwobi scored the crucial goal, as the Super Eagles beat Zambia 1-0, to qualify for the 2018 World Cup.
