Members of the Upper Chamber of the National Assembly, Monday, were stunned when they learnt that a total sum of N28 million was lavished this year by the Federal Civil Service Commission (FCSC) to renovate just 26 toilets.
Senate Committee on Establishment and Public Service led by Senator Aloysius Etok was told that N18 million was exhausted to renovate the commission’s offices in 2012 and N25 million went to ITC equipment for the various offices.
Chairman of FCSC, Deaconess Joan Olatoyosi, disclosed this when she led others to defend the 2013 budget of the Commission.
Olatoyosi informed the senate that the sum of N129 million was approved for the commission to conduct the 2012 interview and promotion of civil servants. Also, over N70 million was later released by the Federal Government to be added to the earlier sum.
The chairman said that over 1,229 workers out of the 4,034 civil servants interviewed were promoted.
In his reaction, Senator Etok while referring to the commission’s claims as fraudulent, lamented that it was unfortunate for a commission to have gone that extra mile in defrauding government.
He said: “As a chairman of this committee, let me say here that we disagree with this and on this note, we request to meet with all those involved in this contract.
“We, the politicians are the ones that people call thieves, nobody calls you, the civil servants thieves.”
Meanwhile, Olatoyosi denied collecting money from any applicant as bribe for employment. She said anyone with proof should come out and challenge her.
The commission’s chairman said she was hearing the allegation for the first time.
She claimed that prominent Nigerians have not stopped commending her transparency in managing the affairs of the commission.
