Former Governor of Ekiti State, Segun Oni, on Sunday said the current governor of the state, Ayodele Fayose honoured himself with the way he celebrated ex-military governor of the old Western region, Adeyinka Adebayo.
Oni made the remark during a visit to Fayose at the State’s government house, in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital and was contained in a statement by the governor’s spokesperson, Idowu Adelusi.
The former governor while speaking said he had visited Fayose to formally inform him of the death of former Minister of Education, Babalola Borisade.
Oni was quoted in the statement as saying there was nothing bad in celebrating Nigerian heroes.
He said, “I am here basically to formally notify the governor of the passing into glory of the former minister and a prominent leader, our brother, father and mentor, Babalola Borisade and to commend the governor for the honour done our father, Adeyinka Adebayo.
“When we celebrate our leaders, we honour ourselves. Fayose has honoured himself, Ekiti and all of us the way and manner he celebrated General Adebayo.”
Oni, who called for unity among Yorubas, noted that politics should not be allowed to tear the people apart.
“We are all Yorubas and the more reason we have to come together for the development and progress of our land. Politics should not divide us beyond the necessary,” he added.
