How DPO allegedly beat up female traffic warden who flagged down his car


A female traffic warden at the Sagamu Expressway, Ogun state was on Monday allegedly beaten to a pulp by the Divisional Police Officer, DPO in charge of Ikenne Police Division in the state, Mr. Patrick Onwu, for stopping his private vehicle at an intersection in Abeokuta, the Punch is reporting.

The DPO was reportedly travelling inward Abeokuta on the Siun-Kopabe-Sagamu Expressway, when he veered into a nearby Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC filling station, disobeying the traffic warden.

The traffic warden, Anifat Bello who was discharging her official duty at the same filling station located on the IBB Boulevard Way is reported to have received many honours for her dedication to duty.

He was said to have flagged down the DPO’s car as he approached the junction, which angered him.

According to the report, Onwu, who was on mufti, drove into the filling station, pulled over and changed into a police uniform, and allegedly descended on the traffic warden, leaving her with a swollen face.

The state Police Public Relations Officer,PPRO, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, when contacted, said the Commissioner of Police, CP, Abdulmajid Ali, was unhappy about the incident and had directed that the matter be thoroughly investigated.

The PPRO recalled that former President, Olusegun Obasanjo had sometime during a courtesy visit to the state by the Inspector-General of Police, Solomon Arase, last year, recommended the traffic officer for promotion.

According to him, “The woman traffic officer has reported the matter to the CP and he has directed that the matter be thoroughly investigated.

“If the allegation is true, I am very sure the CP will know what to do.

“The CP was not happy when the woman came with a swollen face,” the PPRO added.
