The River State Police Command has arrested one Bethel Samuel, the personal assistant of a popular new generation church pastor in the state, for allegedly defiling a three-year-old girl at Rumuolumeni community in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, LGA, of the state.
The 28-year-old man was nabbed by security operatives from the Rumuolumini Police Station in Port Harcourt, the state capital on Wednesday, after he committed the act on Sunday.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Nnamdi Omoni, who confirmed the report to newsmen, said the suspect was arrested after relatives of the victim raised the alarm.
He noted that the matter was reported to the police, adding that “The suspect would be charged to court at the end of investigations and the 3-year-old victim has been taken to the hospital for treatment.”
In his confession, Samuel blamed the devil for the incident.
He said, “I am the personal assistant to my pastor at Divine Assembly. We were organizing a crusade. We went out to paste the crusade posters when my pastor called me. He directed me to go to his house and bring some money.
“It was there that I saw the children playing around. I grabbed one of them and that was what happened. It was purely the handiwork of the devil.
“I don’t know what happened; all I know is that I am not happy with what is happening to me. It is stupidity that led me to sexually harass the little girl. If I will be given a second chance, I must surely be a good person.”
The suspect begged the police and parents of the victim for mercy.
“Police and the parents of the girl should have mercy and consider what happened as an act of the devil. I am promising the government and the parents that if they allow me to go free, I will never misbehave again,” he pleaded.
