Sule Lamido, a presidential aspirant on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has stated that President Muhammadu Buhari would have lost the 2015 presidential election.
He pointed out that though he was popular, topshots of the former ruling party who joined the All Progressives Congress, APC, helped Buhari become president after three attempts.
The former Jigawa state governor added that the prominent PDP defectors used their influence and resources to ensure that another party took over reins of power since Nigeria returned to democracy in 1999.
Speaking Friday on the BBC Hausa Service in Kano, Lamido listed former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Kano Governor, Rabi’u Kwankwaso and Senate President Bukola Saraki as those that gave APC victory.
The politician also said Buhari declared intention to re-contest after the massive crowd that attended the PDP’s rally in his home state, Katsina.
“I am not scared of Buhari’s declaration to re-contest. Rather, he made the quick announcement because he was scared by the huge crowed at our rally in his home state, Katsina. We also pulled crowed in Sokoto, Kaduna and Kebbi States, that is why Buhari is scared”, he said.
“Buhari is popular, no doubt about that, but did he win elections when he contested three times? He did not win until our sons, like Atiku, Saraki, Kwankwaso, Nyako, Goje, Adamu Abdullahi, defected from PDP to APC.
“So, that means Buhari is our grandson son. He is free to seek re-election like any other Nigerian, as guaranteed by the constitution, but we will defeat him come 2019”, he said.
On youths’ criticisms that old people should not continue to run for elective offices, the former Minister of Foreign Affairs said: “Go and tell Buhari first. He is older than me. Youth are not blocked from aspiring political offices. They have the right, but go and talk to Buhari about it first.”
