An Igbosere Magistrate’s Court sitting in Lagos state on Tuesday arraigned a 71 year-old man, Bamidele Doherty for allegedly duping a woman to the tune of N2.6 million.
According to the prosecutor, Cyriacus Osuji, the incident happened on June 5 at Parkview Estate, Ikoyi.
Osuji told the court, “Doherty is being tried alongside 3 other suspects still at large; Jubrin Yusuf, 47; Mathew Adeniyi, 39; and Kehinde Adeleye, 35.
“The Septuagenarian pretended to be a landlord in the highbrow Ikoyi area and along with the others, collected the sum of N2.6 million from the victim (names withheld) under the guise of securing a two-bedroom apartment for her in Parkview Estate, Ikoyi.
“The complainant transferred the sum online and the accused disappeared with the money until they were apprehended by the police,” the prosecutor added, noting that the suspects are being tried on a four-count charge bordering on conspiracy, fraud and stealing.
In his ruling, the magistrate, Mrs. A. Y. Omeyele, granted the accused a bail of N250, 000, with two sureties each in like sum.
Omeyele added that the sureties must produce evidence of tax payment and be gainfully employed.
