Hold corrupt successive governments responsible for damaged petroleum industry – Buhari

Former Head of State and presidential candidate of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) in the last general election, Gen. Mohammadu Buhari (rtd), has said that ‘corrupt successive governments damaged the petroleum industry and Nigeria became a net importer of petroleum only to discover that even the money was stolen.”

General Buhari said this in Lafia when he paid a courtesy visit on Governor Umaru Tanko Al-makura of Nasarawa State where he went for the wedding fathia of former Minister of Works, Dr. Hassan Lawal.

According to him, during his period as the Head of State, Nigeria had only one refinery producing 60,000 barrels of crude oil per day, which was later upgraded to produce 100,000 barrels per day.

On the perceived inability of the Jonathan administration to prosecute indicted Nigerians, the former Head of State praised the press for doing pretty well by sustaining the pressure on the government to prosecute the thieves. Speaking on the proposed merger between his party, the CPC  and the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), Buhari who confirmed that he met Ahmed Bola Tinubu in Lagos in company with Malam Nasir el Rufa’i and Jimmy Lawal, to deliberate over the proposed merger, said it was not only with the ACN, but with other opposition parties. He stressed that the only constraint to the opposition is for there to be a credible, free and fair election.

According to him, “the merger will work this time because of the ample time ahead for the opposition parties to discuss terms of the merger and alliances, in forthcoming general elections,” Buhari added.
