Hodgson resigns as England manager

Roy Hodgson has announced his resignation as England coach, after they were eliminated from the 2016 European Championship.

Iceland produced one of the shocks of the tournament, beating Hodgson’s team 2-1 to qualify for the quarter-finals.

The Three Lions took an early lead, after the referee pointed to the spot, following a tackle on Raheem Sterling inside the area. Captain Wayne Rooney stepped up and scored the penalty.

Two minutes later, Ragnar Sigurdsson made it 1-1. In the 19th minute, Kolbeinn Sigthorsson scored to give the tiny nation the lead, which they held onto despite late pressure.

“Now is the time for somebody else to oversee this young, talented group,” Hodgson said afterwards.

“The players didn’t turn up tonight for their country.

“These things happen.

“I can only hope that we will see an England team in the final of a major tournament very soon.”

He left the press conference without taking any questions.
