Gonzalo Higuain has been given a four-match ban, for his red card in Napoli’s defeat to Udinese over the weekend. The Argentina striker who has scored 30 goals in 31 Serie A appearances this season, was dismissed for a second bookable offence by referee Massimiliano Irrati.
Higuain then appeared to push the referee and had to be led away by his team-mates.
The two yellow cards attract an automatic one-game suspension, while Lega Serie A has added an additional three games for his conduct before leaving the pitch.
“In addition [to the one-game ban for two yellow cards], in the moment of being sent off in the 31st minute of the second half, he [Higuain] made an offensive remark to the referee and made a disrespectful gesture towards him, facing up to him and placing both of his hands on his chest; for having, finally, assumed an aggressive attitude towards an opponent, while being held back by his own teammates,” read a Lega Serie A disciplinary statement.
The 28-year-old will now miss the games against Hellas Verona, Inter Milan, Bologna and Roma.
He has also been fined €20,000.
