Guus Hiddink has resigned as manager of Anzhi Makhachkala.
The 66-year-old only signed a one-year contract extension with the club in June, after he was linked with Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid.
It is believed that the six-match ban, which he receieved for pushing an official during Anzhi’s 2-1 defeat against Dinamo Moscow, is the reason why the Dutchman is stepping down.
“FC Anzhi has accepted the request of the head coach to terminate their employment relationship,” a statement on the club’s official website said.
“The club sincerely thanks Guus Hiddink for his significant contribution to the club, and wishes him success in his future career.”
He has been replaced by Sir Alex Ferguson’s former assistant, Rene Meulensteen.
