Heritage, Seplat oil companies get seven-day ultimatum over alleged neglect of Delta community

Ugbokodo-Okpe community in Okpe Local Government Area of Delta State on Monday issued the Management of Heritage and Seplat oil campanies a seven-day ultimatum to meet with their demands or consider their “manifolds” shutdown.

The community handed the seven-day ultimatum during a peaceful protest by its indigenes comprising women, youths and unemployed graduates.

Indigenes of the community, who displayed placards with different inscriptions, protested over alleged neglect by the two oil firms.

The protesters were led by Sunday Oduthe, Richard Ogele, president of the community and youth leader respectively, as well as the Woman Leader, Mrs. Esther Ogele.

They demanded that the companies include them (the indigenes) in direct employment; empower its women, give scholarship to indigent students as well as build a civic centre amongst other things for them.

At the time of this report, officials of the two companies were yet to address the protesters, and no official statement has been released to the effect.

However, the protesters are still chanting solidarity songs near the companies’ gates.

Details later…
