Herdsmen threaten to shut down cattle markets in Oyo

Fulani herdsmen in Ibarapa area of Oyo State, on the platform of Jamu Nati Fulbe Association of Nigeria, JNFAN, have threatened to close down all cattle markets in the area over alleged disappearance of about 500 of their cows.

The cattle rearers said all complaints lodged over the missing cows have not yielded any result.

Speaking with journalists in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, yesterday, National Chairman of the Fulani socio-cultural organisation, Alhaji Saliu Kadir, pointed out that the first step to compel the stakeholders to pay attention to them is for all cattle markets in the area to shut down.

According to him, the action was intended to protest alleged continuous killing of their animals by unknown farmers in the area.

Kadir further warned that the markets’ closure would for one week in the interim, adding that it would be extended if they failed to get the authorities’ assurance of being protected from those killing their cattle indiscriminately.

They disclosed that the matter has been reported to the Oyo State Government and the state Police Command.
