Against the backdrop of the crisis between Fulani herdsmen and farmers in Ossissa community in Delta State, the House of Representatives on Wednesday called on President Muhammadu Buhari to deploy troops to the community to quell the crisis.
The lawmakers made this demand, following a motion under Matters of Urgent Public Importance moved during plenary by a member of the House, Hon Ossai Ossai ,Delta.
Ossai stated that the herdsmen had laid siege on the community since October 22, 2016.
He disclosed that the herdsmen’s latest attack, which occurred between 3pm and 6pm of Tuesday, led to the injuring of persons and destruction of property worth millions of naira.
The lawmaker explained that the herdsmen used sophisticated weapons against defenceless locals, in what he described as a “coordinated attack”.
He stated that in the last nine days, the community has witnessed indiscriminate shooting of people, kidnapping of children, raping of women, looting of property and burning of houses by the herdsmen.
Recall that Fulani herdsmen and youths in Umunor community, Ossissa Kingdom in the Ndokwa East Local Government Area of Delta State, on Monday, exchanged gun fire, sparking serious tension in the area.
Reacting to Ossai’s motion, the Speaker of the House, Yakubu Dogara, urged the Inspector-General of Police to urgently secure and maintain peace in Ossissa community.
