The House of Representatives has passed a motion, urging the Federal Ministries of Agriculture, Rural Development and Industry to facilitate the establishment of more animal feeds production firms as well as encouraging sustainability of all existing factories in the country.

This resolution of the lower chamber of the National Assembly is coming on the heels of incessant clashes between Fulani Herdsmen and Farmers/locals, where thousands of lives have been lost in recent times.

While moving the motion, the member representing Ankpa/Omala/Olamaboro Federal Constituency of Kogi State, Hon. Hassan Omale posited that, “apart from the security measures which the government can take to reduce the clashes and killings between farmers and the Herdsmen; the government can also facilitate the establishment of animal feeds production factories in different parts of Nigeria”.

This, according to Hon. Omale, will afford “those who engage in animal husbandry to buy feeds for their animals, thereby stopping the movements across the length and breadth of Nigeria in search of pasture for their cattle”.

Hon. Omale said he was convinced that when more animal feeds factories are established, it would help provide enough feeds for the estimated 20 million herds of cattle and numerous goats, rams, sheep and other animals being reared in Nigeria.

“It would help in providing enough feeds for the animals, guarantee the success of intensive animal husbandry, reduce the clashes between farmers and herdsmen and provide employment opportunities for numerous youths in different parts of Nigeria,” he added.
