Heavy D’s cause of death revealed

Last month, the passing of legendary rapper Heavy D, at 44, caught many by surprise.

Now, several weeks after his death, officials from the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office are shedding light on the cause.

The rapper’s death was due to a pulmonary embolism—a blood clot in the lung—caused by deep leg vein thrombosis, spokesman Craig Harvey revealed, according to reports. And it looks like the condition may have been caused by Heavy’s long flight back to L.A. after he performed in England at a Michael Jackson tribute concert.

There is often a risk of the clots developing on long plane flights, due to people being seated for hours at a time.

According to Craig, Heavy’s weight and a pre-existing heart condition were also factors in his passing. The office officially classified his death as “natural.”

On November 8, Heavy, who turned his excess weight into part of his act with 1980s hits like “Overweight Lover” and “Mr. Big Stuff,” collapsed outside of his Beverly Hill home and died at the hospital afterwards.
