Vice President Namadi Sambo on Saturday disclosed that the Federal Government has approved a total sum of N37billion for the completion of the Gurara dam project in Kaduna State.
Sambo said this in Kaduna while speaking with some victims of the recent flood disaster in the state.
He announced that the government has released N400 million to support the victims and that plans were underway to dredge the River Kaduna to allow for free flow of water in order to encourage dry season farming along the river bank.
He revealed that 300 graduates would be employed to work at the Gurara irrigation and fish farms and that on completion, the dam would support 16 thousand hectares of irrigation farms and generate 32 megawatts of electricity.
Mr. Sambo added that the government had approved the release of seeds and other inputs to irrigation farmers to encourage massive dry season farming and to arrest possible food shortage due to recent floods.
On the 215 megawatt Kaduna Emergency Power Project, the number 2 citizen said work had reached 70 per cent completion, while the Abuja-Kaduna rail project had reached over 40 per cent.
In his address, Governor Patrick Yakowa told the Vice President that “property and farmlands worth N9.1 billion were lost during the flood disaster which claimed six lives and affected 5,254 persons” in the state.
He aid three bridges and more than 40 culverts as well as other road infrastructure and farmlands were damaged.
Yakowa thanked the federal government, Dangote Group and Saraduna Foundation for their immense support since the disaster occurred while also appealing for more assistance against future occurrence
