In not less than 48 hours of the President’s directives to release some female suspects currently in detention as a result of the activities of the Boko Haram sect, gunmen believed to have escaped from one of the insurgent’s camps had reportedly unleashed terror in some parts of Maiduguri, killing four people including a medical student.
Eye witness who did not want his name in print told DailyPost that the incident happened around Pompomari area of Maiduguri, where a trader, Mallam Bitrus Koji, his son and an almajiri boy working for the late Bitrus were killed in their shops by the suspected sect members.
According to him, “the gunmen who came in a gulf car, called the almajiri boy to bring water for them. When he went in, one of the sons of Mallam Bitrus came out and the gunmen asked after his father. When the boy told them that his father was not around, they pushed him into the shop where they met Mallam Bitrus seated. They opened fire at him, then they turned to his boy and the almajiri and they opened fire at them, killing the three inside the shop.”
Also along Baga road, a medical student was said to have been pursued by some gunmen who shot and killed him, then they dropped his body by the road side and went away with his car.
Speaking to Mr. Auta Haliru, he told our correspondent that, they were seated by the roadside, behind Ibrahim Taiwo Police Station when they saw some policemen coming with their vehicle, carrying some corpses.
“When we asked some of our friends, whom we saw with the police, they told us that the sound of gun shots we heard earlier happened to be an attack at Bitrus shop. They told us that the gunmen killed Bitrus who owns a big shop at the junction around Chesscon area. We were shocked because we all thought this problem was almost ending. Auta told DailyPost in Maiduguri.
DailyPost correspondent was at the police headquarters for confirmation but could not get the PPRO, DSP Gideon Jibril or the Commissioner of Police, Yuguda Abdullahi to speak on the development as it was said that both men were not on seat. Due to the limited phone network in Maiduguri , we were unable to put a call across to them.
