Gunmen kill 18 hunters in Borno

The Deputy Governor of Borno state, Alhaji Zannah Mustapha who saw an empty town while passing through the local government expressed shock on why one of the busiest towns in the state was deserted particularly during market day. On his way to Maiduguri, he decided to stop over at the town to find out what happened that led to such unprecedented quietness in Damboa town.

The district head of Damboa, Alhaji Abba Ahmed informed the Deputy Governor that unknown gunmen yesterday came to the market, attacked and shot dead 18 people, mainly local hunters.

According to him, 13 died on the spot while 5 died in the hospital. Adding that, the local hunters who kill and sell monkeys and wild-pig in the market were said to have been given strange warning earlier by unknown persons before the fateful day.

The District Head said the gunmen were not resident of the town as he was told by eye witness, but they came in a golf car, carried out the operation and left the town.

Alhaji Zannah Mustapha therefore called on the people of Damboa town in Damboa local government to return and go about their normal businesses.

He also directed the military men deployed to the area to allow people go about their normal business as up to 9 o’clock, which is the last hour before the curfew and also advised them to cooperate with the people in the area to get useful information that will lead to the arrest of the perpetrators.

The people of the town on the other hand were instructed by the Deputy Governor who told them to cooperate with the security agencies by giving them useful information or reporting any suspicious movement around towns, pointing out that without such cooperation, nothing could be achieved.
