Travellers along Maiduguri/Damboa/Biu road are lamenting over the turn of event on the highway as gunmen suspected to be members of the Islamic jihad group, Boko Haram, have taken control of the road, particularly their activities in Dalwa village where not less than 16 persons were said to have been killed in just one week.
Dalwa is about 23 kilometres away from Maiduguri, the Borno state capital and is alledged to be one of the black spots where Boko Haram activities have been prominent since last year.
DailyPost gathered that, the gunmen in the last one week had killed about 16 travellers plying Dalwa road, a situation which has scared people travelling along that route to Biu, Gombe or Adamawa states.
Mr. Usman Kadala who spoke to DailyPost in Maiduguri said, while he was coming to Maiduguri yesterday (Saturday) to take the corpse of his cousin who was slaughtered in Dalwa on Friday, they saw three corpses along the road at Dalwa. It was later discovered that they were corpses of some Federal civil servants who were killed and their Hilux vehicle taken away by unknown gunmen.
His words” I don’t know why these terrorists are still operating like this, despite security presence. My cousin who was killed at a filing station between Mega and Dalwa had his head cut from the back and bled to death before the JTF operatives could arrive at the scene.”
Also sources at the Chad Basin Development Authority who did not want their names in print confirmed to DailyPost that six of their Hilux vehicles were snatched at gun point, but they did not confirm whether the occupants of the vehicle were still alive or not.
Speaking also with a driver at Borno Express terminus on the rampant killings along Biu road, the driver, who pleaded anonymous, said the situation calls for concern.
According to him,”On Monday, five people were killed along the road, on Tuesday, a passenger’s vehicle was passing and they opened fire resulting in the killing of two passenger, on Thursday also a bus was stopped and they selected those they wanted to kill, some of them ran into the bus, but the three that remained were gunned down.”
He said, the situation was becoming frightening by the day, and unless something is done, many would still go down.
