Gunmen kidnap Rivers LG chairman

The Rivers State Police Command, on Saturday, confirmed the kidnap of a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Chairman of the Caretaker Committee of Ahoada East Local Government Area, Cassidy Ikegbudu.

Its spokesman, a Deputy Superintendent (DSP), told journalists in Port Harcourt, the state capital, that the police had received report of the abduction of the council chairman.

“The command is aware of the incident involving the Caretaker Committee Chairman. Action has been put in place to rescue him safely,” he said.

Also commenting, the APC House of Assembly candidate for Ahoada East Constituency 1, Eric Apia, said that armed men abducted Ikegbudu from his village, Yiboko, in the early hours of Saturday.

“From the reports received from his family, there was exchange of fire between security personnel attached to the chairman and the armed men.

“The armed men later took the chairman away, dragging him to a nearby river and went away in a speed boat,” he said.

Ahoada East was scheduled to have a re-run election for the House of Assembly.

However, shooting was heard from Friday night till the early hours of Saturday, an incident that disrupted the planned election.
