Gunmen invade Lagos poly, injure students

Several students were injured after gunmen suspected to be cultists attacked the Lagos State Polytechnic, Ikorodu campus.

According to eyewitnesses, the gunmen stormed the hostel, claiming to be searching for a stolen laptop.

It was gathered that one of the residents of the hostel, who is a National Diploma One student, had earlier been invited for initiation by the cultists but he declined.

One of the eyewitnesses, Bayo, said, “When they first came in the afternoon, they said they were searching for a missing item.

“They said the person that stole it passed through the estate. We engaged them and they failed in their attempt to gain entrance.

“Suddenly, around few minutes past 09pm, a larger group came and started calling the name of one of us in the hostel to come out.

“Immediately they called his name, we remembered that he once told us that some people were disturbing him to join a cult group. Some of us went out and we asked others to protect him in seclusion. Four of us were eventually injured.”

Confirming the incident, President of the Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria in Lagos State, Dr. Saheed Ashafa, lamented that the hostel attacked was predominantly occupied by male Muslim students in the institution.

He said, “Our members in Ikorodu were attacked by cultists in their hostel last night (Monday).

“According to the report sent to me early this morning (Tuesday), they (the attackers) were actually trying to initiate a brother (Muslim student) in ND one (part time), so they wanted to intimidate the MSSN hostel where he resides to get their way.

“I was informed that they (the cultists) have been threatening him from school with the support of a lecturer. They had access to the hostel at first by claiming that they are searching for their missing laptop but challenged. They later went there in multitude. Some brothers sustained injuries but have been treated and discharged.”
