Gunmen attack Chibok; kill soldier, police officer, burn down school, LG secretariat, houses

Gunmen suspected to be members of dreaded Boko Haram have attacked Chibok Local Government Area of Borno State, killing a soldier and a police officer.

The attack on Monday night also left many houses burnt, including Government Girls’ Secondary School and the Chibok Local Government secretariat.

Although the number civilian casualties remain unknown, hundreds of residents are fleeing the local government.

“We are yet to ascertain whether there are civilian casualties, but a soldier and a police officer were killed during the attack.

“We are devastated, the attackers came shooting sporadically, some of the security personnel who could not stand the fire power of the attackers took to their heels.

“Save for the bravery of some residents who stood their ground and fought, the gunmen would have overran the whole local government”, Yusuf Ndirmbita told DailyPost.

The attack came barely 24 hours after a similar incident at Damboa Local Government left about 11 people dead and several houses burnt by insurgents.

It will also be recalled that in the last two weeks, Borno State have been under series of attacks by the Boko Haram insurgents, claiming more than 500 lives in Bama, Kala-Balge, Dikwa, Ngala, Abadam, Kukawa, Damboa, Gwoza and Chibok as well as on the highways.
